Lent Term 2014: Week 2
Hi everyone,
Again, we are very thankful for all our members who
came down to judge and run for the London IV this past weekend. If you
would like to be more involved with the society’s events this term, please come
to one of our weekly training sessions or sign up to judge or volunteer at LSE
Open!
So, here are the debate updates from week 2:
1. LSE
Open
2. Widening
Participation
1. LSE Open
On 15-16 February, we will be hosting our
flagship tournament of the year: LSE Open. We hope all of our members
can come and help out during the competition.
LSE Open brings in many international
teams who will need a place to stay, so please sign up as a crash host! This is
a great opportunity to show the DebateSociety’s hospitality and to return
the favor to the institutions that offer crash to our own debaters at
outside competitions.
This is the biggest tournament that we host
and brings in some of the best debaters in the world! We appreciate all
the help we can get from members who can come down to do running and judging.
Like always, we reward our volunteers with free dinner and wine in addition to
two great socials during the weekend!
If you want to help out in any other way,
please email the conveners at lseopen2014@gmail.com
2. Widening Participation
LSE's Widening Participation programme is
running a project called Year 8 Promoting Potential Spring School and they are
very keen to include a debating skills component for complete novice debaters.
As such, we are looking for members who are interested to get involved in this!
The Spring School will be taking place from Monday 7 – Friday 11 April. Please
indicate the days you would be available to deliver a session. This is a good
chance to earn a little holiday cash while doing something incredibly helpful!
For more information about the project, see below:
What is Promoting Potential? Promoting Potential
is a one week non-residential Spring School for 50 bright year 8 (aged 13-14)
boys from African and Caribbean backgrounds attending London state schools.
Taking place on campus, the week is designed to give students an insight into a
range of social science subjects; in particular the subjects that may not be
available to them at school. It will also provide a taster of what it is like
to be a student and study at university, as well as the extracurricular
activities available to students (hopefully including the debate society!). More information is available atlse.ac.uk/promotingpotentialyear8
Have a great week!
