LSESU Open 2018

LSESU Open

The LSE debate committee would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who helped to make the LSEU Open on the 10-11th February such a success! This is consistently one of the most competitive and best run tournaments in Europe and this year was no exception. Thank you to all of the LSE judges who showed up to judge the rounds, and congratulations to Razzaq, Yings, Josh, Keshav, Miko and Sarah for breaking as judges (and Sarah for judging the Open final!) Thanks also goes to all of our dedicated runners who made sure the competition could run efficiently, and to all members of OrgComm for making sure all aspects of the tournament (e.g. food, socials, crash) were run so well.  The Convenors were Razzaq Fazail and Ciara Mitchell and they could not have run the tournament without all the input from the wider Society.

The eventual winners of the tournament were Harish Natarajan and Muhammed Asadullah Khan from CO in the final. The CA team was Matt Hazell, Gigi Gil and Sam Van Elk and their in-round motions can be found here:

R1: THW require purchasers of corporate shares to own those shares for a minimum of 5 years before selling them

R2: THW legalise all genetic modification of human embryos (that meet basic safety standards)

R3: THR the valourisation of marrying for love, as opposed to marrying for pragmatic reasons (e.g money, status, convenience)

R4: THW allow judges to significantly exceed normal sentencing guidelines in areas of high crime

R5: THR the rise of "e-health" websites

We hope you enjoyed LSESU Open as much as we did an that we will see you back next year :)
